Brockton Mayor Moises Rodrigues faces a harassment prevention order after a mother publicly confronted him at a high school graduation ceremony, shouting accusations about her daughter before being escorted away by security.
Public Confrontation at Graduation
During Brockton High School’s graduation ceremony, a woman approached Mayor Rodrigues and declared, “You know what you did to my daughter,” before authorities removed her from the venue. The 64-year-old mayor, who also serves as chair of the Brockton School Committee, was subsequently served with a harassment prevention order on Monday, June 8. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office confirmed an active investigation into a formal complaint filed by a student against the mayor.
The confrontation stems from an incident at Brockton’s Huntington Day Parade on May 22, an annual event honoring fallen veterans. According to the mayor’s office, Rodrigues interacted with a student during the parade in a manner that made the student feel uncomfortable. The mayor told local reporters he could not identify which specific interaction prompted the complaint, noting the parade included hundreds of attendees.
Mayor’s Response and Restrictions
After learning of the complaint through Brockton Public Schools, Rodrigues stated he fully cooperated with the investigation. The mother requested he skip the graduation ceremony entirely, but the mayor chose a compromise. He delivered remarks at the event but declined to distribute diplomas, which would have required close contact with students. Brockton District Court now requires Rodrigues to maintain a distance of 100 yards from the student involved.
A two-party hearing regarding the harassment order is scheduled for Monday, June 22, at Brockton District Court. The mayor attended a closed executive session of the Brockton School Committee on Wednesday to discuss the allegations but refused to answer questions from reporters waiting outside. School committee member Stephen Pina released a Facebook statement emphasizing that every student deserves to feel safe at school-sponsored events.
Community Reactions
Parents and community members expressed mixed emotions about the allegations. Leonie Scott, a parent within the school district, told reporters her heart broke upon hearing the news. She stated she hopes the truth emerges and that part of her wants to believe the allegations are false. School committee member Pina called for a factual understanding of what occurred, what actions were taken, and whether proper procedures were followed during and after the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing, with multiple agencies involved. The case has drawn significant attention in Brockton, a city where the mayor holds dual responsibilities as both chief executive and school committee chair, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest in how the matter is handled.
