Two women recovering from a severe rollover crash in Central Florida were arrested by federal immigration authorities immediately after hospital discharge, sparking debate over enforcement tactics at medical facilities where victims receive emergency care.
Crash Leads To Immigration Detention
Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her daughter Giulianna Mia Carriel Calero, 19, were involved in a violent collision on August 20 at Marigold Avenue and Sheldrake Road in Poinciana. According to family members, another vehicle struck the passenger side of their car while they drove to work, causing the vehicle to roll approximately four times. The impact was so severe that wheels and the trunk separated from the car, which was completely destroyed in the accident.
Both women were transported by ambulance to HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital for treatment. Family member Jonathan Bravo told reporters the victims almost died in the crash and required immediate medical attention for their injuries, including neck trauma that required bracing and pain medication.
Hospital Questioning And Federal Detainers
According to Bravo, Polk County sheriff’s deputies began questioning Calero Cabanilla about her immigration status shortly after hospital arrival while she remained in a neck brace receiving medication. The women were placed in separate rooms for treatment. Deputies investigating the crash discovered both occupants had overstayed their visas after entering the United States legally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed Calero Cabanilla entered lawfully on March 8, 2023, but remained beyond her authorized admission period. Her daughter entered legally on February 8, 2025, and similarly overstayed.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office stated deputies obtained information from crash participants as part of standard accident investigation procedures. After discovering the immigration violations, ICE issued detainers for both women. Following medical discharge, both were transported directly to Polk County Jail rather than released to continue recovery.
Conflicting Claims Over Legal Status
Family members contest aspects of the federal case. Bravo maintains his cousin possessed valid work authorization through a pending asylum application and held a legitimate Social Security number for employment purposes. He stated Carriel Calero held visa documentation valid through 2030. However, ICE characterized both women as illegal aliens from Ecuador arrested following the traffic accident, making no mention of asylum applications or work permits in their official statements.
HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital defended its protocols, stating the facility provides compassionate care regardless of immigration status but must comply with laws governing law enforcement interactions. The hospital emphasized its priority remains medical treatment for all emergency room patients without deviation from care standards, though institutions must cooperate with verified law enforcement officers entering the premises.
Why all the whining stories of poor illegal aliens anyone who’s wanted in America would be arrested as well no matter the situation they should be great full they got medical attention and will continue to get it while in detention.

By overstaying their visas, they’ve broken the law – period. And ICE personnel were doing their jobs as required. So, this is a non-story isn’t it?

Cases like this should be handled on a case by case basis and like “One size fits all”! As a retired Registered Nurse, I would lean on the side of compassion!

They should be thankful for the life saving free medical treatment they were given so that they can safely be returned to where they belong.
No one is above the law
Foregin born military wives do not automatically become US citizens. They are required to go through all the steps to become American citizens. The military will help getting a green card and after 3 years will help getting citizenship.
I have friends who have who came to the states after marrying a GI. I was a military wife for 25 years and we were stationed overseas for 16 years.

Were they here without the correct legal papers? Then, there is no reason they should not be detained and deported regardless of the sympathy for their roll-over problems.
Lets get this straight, the women are illegally here and are breaking the law but they are involved in an auto accident and injured so now they are now not illegals, that should be arrested, Am I getting that right? If (I wanted to become a legal citizen) all I’d have to do is get in an auto accident. Them Demorats got it all figured out!!!!!!
To Ghostdag1. They came to this country with the intention of staying. The first one nothing happened when she overstayed, so she called the other and advised, “come on a tourist visa. If you stay, they don’t care.” Also neither the ambulance or the hospital will ever be paid and they wouldn’t be paid under any circumstances. We taxpayers again get hung with the bill.
