British conservative commentator Milo Yiannopoulos was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a Louisiana airport Thursday after overstaying his visa and missing a mandatory immigration court hearing, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Federal Immigration Violation

Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally in 2019 but violated immigration law by remaining in the country beyond his authorized stay, DHS confirmed Friday. An immigration judge issued a final removal order against him on July 22 after he failed to appear for his scheduled hearing. He remained in ICE custody Friday afternoon pending deportation, according to the agency’s online detainee locator system.

The Department of Homeland Security stated Yiannopoulos “chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws” in an official announcement posted on social media. Federal immigration authorities executed the arrest without incident at the airport, taking him into custody for removal proceedings.

Controversial Campus Tour History

Yiannopoulos gained national attention during the 2016 election cycle as an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump, often referring to the former president as “Daddy” in public statements. He organized a provocative college speaking tour that visited campuses across America, which he claimed promoted free speech and conservative viewpoints in academic environments dominated by liberal ideology.

His campus appearances frequently sparked intense protests, with some demonstrations turning violent. At the University of California, Berkeley in February 2017, officials canceled his scheduled event after protests became destructive and two Republican students were attacked. Critics accused him of using racist and inflammatory language targeting Muslims, transgender individuals, and other groups to deliberately provoke campus unrest rather than foster genuine dialogue.

Immigration Enforcement Advocacy

The detention carries particular irony given Yiannopoulos’s recent advocacy for aggressive immigration enforcement. Last year, he publicly called for ICE checkpoints at California supermarkets and other public spaces, demanding immediate deportation for anyone unable to prove legal status in the United States. His social media posts consistently championed strict border control and removal of individuals violating immigration law—the same legal framework now being applied to his own case.

The arrest highlights the principle that immigration law applies equally regardless of political affiliation or public prominence. Federal authorities continue processing his case according to standard removal procedures established by immigration courts.
