Seattle investigators are searching for a masked suspect captured on surveillance video fleeing an unoccupied home moments after flames erupted on the third floor, with authorities believing the Thursday night fire was deliberately set to destroy the property off Aurora Avenue North.

Suspect Captured on Surveillance Video

The fire broke out around the 2100 block of Aurora Avenue North last Thursday evening. Surveillance footage captured the critical moments when flames suddenly appeared on the third floor of the vacant home. As the blaze intensified, outdoor lights briefly cut out before flickering back on, revealing an individual dressed entirely in dark clothing with a mask and backpack. The person walked northbound along Aurora Avenue immediately after leaving the burning property, heading away from the growing inferno.

Seattle Fire Department responded to the scene after neighbors reported hearing popping sounds. By the time residents noticed the commotion, the adjacent structure was already fully engulfed in flames. The fire spread rapidly through the unoccupied building, sending burning embers into surrounding trees and igniting dry pine needles in the area. Fortunately, no one was inside the home during the incident, and firefighters reported no injuries.

Criminal Investigation Underway

Detective Brian Pritchard with the Seattle Police Department outlined the investigative approach authorities are taking to identify the suspect. Investigators are collecting evidence from both the surveillance footage and the fire scene to determine exactly how the blaze was started and who may be responsible. The detective emphasized the immediate public safety concern posed by the unknown arsonist. “If they can determine who set it, that’s somebody we can take off the street that may set another fire,” Pritchard explained during an interview about the ongoing investigation.
