PROOF: He Was a Serial Killer!

Pennsylvania State Police announced that advanced DNA testing has connected a deceased man to two unsolved murders from the 1970s, confirming that a serial killer operated in Washington County during that decade.

Decades-Old Cases Solved Through DNA Technology

Authorities identified James Richard Clark Sr., who died in 2023 at age 66, as the perpetrator responsible for murdering Susan Rush and Brenda Ritter in southwestern Pennsylvania. Clark was a teenager living in Washington County when he committed the crimes, ages 19 and 20 at the time of the respective homicides. The breakthrough came after DNA testing conducted in May 2025 conclusively linked the same offender to both victims.

Brenda Ritter, 18, was killed in 1977. Her body was discovered on a hillside, and investigators determined she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. The cases remained cold for nearly five decades until modern forensic technology provided the critical evidence needed to identify Clark as the killer.

Ongoing Investigation and Additional Victims

Corporal James Petrosky, the criminal investigation assessment supervisor with Troop B of the Pennsylvania State Police, addressed media concerns about whether Clark may have committed additional murders. Petrosky stated that authorities have not ruled out the possibility of more victims, emphasizing that serial killers typically continue their patterns. He expressed belief that additional victims could potentially exist, though no specific cases have been publicly connected to Clark at this time.

Both victims’ families have been notified of the investigation’s findings and have requested privacy as they process this information. The announcement brings closure to two families who waited decades for answers about their loved ones’ deaths.

Justice Through Modern Science

The resolution of these cold cases demonstrates how advances in DNA analysis continue to solve crimes that remained mysteries for generations. Law enforcement agencies increasingly rely on genetic testing to reexamine evidence from unsolved homicides, providing answers to families and ensuring that perpetrators are identified even after death. While Clark cannot face prosecution due to his passing, the confirmation of his guilt offers families and communities the truth they long sought about these tragic murders.
