Pierce County authorities removed 17 starving animals from an unlicensed rescue operation in Puyallup, Washington, after discovering dogs and cats confined to small crates without food or water for days in deplorable garage conditions.
Discovery of Deplorable Conditions
Pierce County Sheriff’s Animal Control officers responded to complaints on September 21 about a property operating as a dog rescue under dangerous conditions. When officers arrived at the Puyallup home, they found 15 dogs crammed into small crates inside a garage with no access to food or water. Two of the dogs had sustained injuries, and evidence suggested multiple animals had been confined to their crates for extended periods without relief or proper care.
The property lacked the required kennel license to operate as an animal rescue facility. Animal Control officers documented the conditions and determined the animals faced immediate health risks. Officers returned the following day to remove all animals from the property and transport them to safety.
Cats Found in Second Garage
In addition to the dogs, officers discovered two cats confined in a separate garage structure. The cats were also held in cramped crates without access to food or water. According to the sheriff’s office assessment, the cats appeared to have gone without proper nutrition or hydration for approximately five days before authorities intervened. The animals showed visible signs of neglect and required immediate veterinary attention.
Animals Receive Proper Care
All 17 animals were officially seized from the property on September 22. Pierce County Animal Control transported the dogs and cats to a licensed rescue facility equipped to provide proper care and medical treatment. The animals will receive veterinary examinations, treatment for injuries and malnutrition, and rehabilitation before becoming available for adoption. An animal cruelty investigation remains underway, though authorities have not yet filed criminal charges or identified suspects publicly.
