ICE ARRESTS Parents During Preschool Graduation Ceremony

Federal immigration agents arrested two parents in front of their children during a preschool graduation ceremony in Baltimore, sparking outrage from state and local officials who say the action violated recently enacted city protections for schools.

Arrests Unfold at Elementary School

The incident occurred Thursday in the parking lot of Commodore John Rodgers Elementary School. According to school officials, the couple drove onto school property while being pursued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Witness videos show agents restraining a man on the pavement before taking a woman into custody as parents and young children rushed past. The arrested parents had their children in the vehicle, who witnesses said screamed as agents removed their parents from the car. Teachers brought the children inside to shelter them from the scene.

One witness filming the arrest shouted that ICE was operating on school property illegally. The graduation ceremony continued after agents departed with the two individuals. School administrators have not confirmed whether the arrested parents had children enrolled at the school, and the identities of those detained remain undisclosed, along with any potential criminal history.

City Officials Condemn Federal Action

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the arrests a disturbing incident and said federal immigration enforcement is not welcome in the city. He stated that ICE presence has created fear and anxiety among immigrant residents rather than improving public safety. The mayor’s office contacted federal authorities to express anger over the school grounds operation. Maryland Governor Wes Moore echoed these concerns, saying schools should be safe spaces where parents can drop off children without fear and educators can focus on teaching rather than witnessing federal enforcement actions.

Legal Questions Arise

Baltimore passed emergency legislation last month prohibiting federal agents from conducting arrests at sensitive locations including public schools. Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson, who shared videos of the incident, praised educators as heroic for protecting the children during the arrests. Governor Moore said his administration has opened direct communication with ICE leadership to understand why agents conducted the operation on school grounds and to prevent future occurrences. School officials are working with local, state, and federal agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
