Gun FIRES In Walmart As Man Reaches For Phone

A Georgia woman shopping at Walmart suffered ankle injuries after a gun carried loose in a man’s basketball shorts discharged when he reached for his cell phone, sending bullet fragments and floor tile shrapnel into her legs.

Firearm Discharges in Crowded Store

The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 9, at the Walmart location on Inner Perimeter Road in Valdosta. According to the Valdosta Police Department, John Eady, 21, was carrying a firearm in the front pocket of his basketball-style shorts without any holster. When Eady reached into the same pocket to retrieve his cell phone, the weapon discharged into the floor. The bullet and resulting floor tile fragments struck a 34-year-old female shopper in both ankles. She received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Arrest Follows Investigation

Police investigators determined that Eady’s method of carrying the firearm represented a gross deviation from the standard of care a reasonable person would exercise. Officers obtained an arrest warrant for reckless conduct on Wednesday, June 10. Upon learning of the warrant, Eady immediately turned himself in at the Valdosta Police Department and was transported to Lowndes County Jail without incident. The charge reflects the danger posed by improper firearm storage in public spaces.

Firearm Safety and Legal Responsibility

The case highlights the critical importance of proper firearm storage and handling in public settings. Georgia law permits licensed individuals to carry firearms, but gun owners bear legal responsibility for preventing accidental discharges. Carrying a loaded weapon loose in a pocket with other objects creates significant risk of unintended firing. Standard safety practices require firearms to be secured in appropriate holsters that cover the trigger guard and prevent accidental contact. The reckless conduct charge acknowledges that while the shooting was unintentional, the circumstances leading to it reflected dangerous negligence that endangered public safety in a crowded retail environment.

  1. Might want to consider number of police officers involved in unintentional discharge of pistols and whether they were arrested.
