A 13-year-old boy was shot to death in Washington, D.C. after being lured from his apartment by two males who knocked on his door, then his body was dragged onto the sidewalk in a brutal killing that authorities believe may stem from a school fight.
Teen Killed After Leaving His Apartment
Ahmad Mims was staying at his apartment on the 1600 block of Rosedale Street when someone knocked on his door Saturday evening requesting he come outside. Ring camera footage captured two young males waiting in the hallway as Ahmad opened the door. He closed it after seeing them and looked through the camera. Shortly after, Ahmad was shot in the chest inside a building on that block, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Monica Mims, Ahmad’s grandmother, told local reporters the suspect knocked on the door and asked him to come outside. That was the last time she saw her grandson alive. Officers responded to reports of a person shot at 8:30 p.m., discovering Ahmad unconscious and not breathing from an apparent gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead minutes later.
Witness Describes Body Being Dragged
Court records reveal one witness saw Ahmad’s body lying on the front stairwell of a building on Rosedale Street, with his feet facing the front door and his head on the stairs. That same witness reported seeing the victim being dragged to the sidewalk by a black male wearing all black clothing with a muscular build. The graphic detail of the crime scene disturbed Ahmad’s grandmother deeply.
Monica Mims expressed her anguish over the callous treatment of her grandson’s body. She told reporters that dragging him out like a bag of trash hurt her even more, especially knowing a young person could think to drag someone outside after shooting them. The brutality of the crime has shaken the community and left investigators searching for answers about what motivated such violence against a child.
School Fight May Have Sparked Murder
Ahmad had been involved in a fight at school prior to his murder, according to his grandmother. Police have not disclosed whether they believe the incident is connected to the killing. However, other witnesses have told authorities they believe Ahmad was killed for hitting the suspect’s sister. The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the exact motive and identify those responsible for the teenager’s death.
The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Anyone with information can call police at 202-727-9099 or text tips to 50411. Authorities continue searching for the person or persons responsible for this heinous crime against a child.
