When reporters approached DePeña after his court appearance, his lawyer abruptly stated the mayor does not speak English and refused further comment. Throughout the exchange, DePeña smiled and repeatedly said only two words in English: bless you. The bizarre scene concluded when the vehicle carrying DePeña crashed into a parked car while attempting to leave the courthouse, an incident also captured on video by witnesses.

U.S. Attorney Leah Foley emphasized that DePeña held a position of public trust and leadership but allegedly violated that responsibility through fraudulent conduct. If convicted on all charges, the mayor faces up to three decades in federal prison. As a veteran of the US military I’m ashamed of democrats that continue to support and allow illegal immigrants to rip off America. We have homeless veterans living on the streets and American families struggling to make ends meet but illegals recieve the benefits that should be only for Americans.

How could the “mayor publicly acknowledge” ANYTHING; with Sign Language? Additionally, in order to “obtain citizenship”, an individual must be able to read and write, at least rudimentary, English. He was also a City Council member “from 2016 to 2021” and “has served as Lawrence’s mayor since November 2021; winning re-election in 2025”; did he not participate in ANY kind of debate or town hall meeting? How did he campaign? How did the voting public learn of DePena as a candidate & HOW on God’s green earth, did a majority elect him as mayor, TWICE, without him EVER speaking ANYTHING, beyond “Bless you”? I believe the fraudulent one here is the attorney!!
