Why Did Climbers RISK Arrest For Rooftop Proposal?

Two professional urban climbers scaled the Empire State Building’s antenna 1,454 feet above Manhattan Wednesday, unfurled a banner about love and peace, appeared to get engaged, and were promptly arrested by New York police for trespassing and reckless endangerment.

Dangerous Ascent Above Midtown Manhattan

Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, identified by authorities as Angelina Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, climbed to the top of the iconic skyscraper’s antenna without safety equipment. News helicopter footage captured the pair dressed entirely in black, wearing masks, and balancing on the structure without tethers. The two are known internationally for performing high-rise stunts and were featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary titled Skywalkers: A Love Story, which chronicles their dangerous climbing exploits around the world.

The banner they displayed read a message about the power of love overcoming the love of power to bring world peace. After several minutes on the structure, the couple collected their banner and began descending. Video footage showed one climber getting on one knee on a lower platform in what appeared to be a marriage proposal. The two then kissed and embraced before police arrived.

Police Response and Arrest

New York Police Department Emergency Services Unit officers responded to the building immediately. The observation deck was cleared during the incident as a safety precaution, then reopened later that afternoon. Body camera footage released by police showed officers climbing up to meet the couple. One officer greeted them and stated plainly that they were not allowed on the structure. An off-camera voice responded with what sounded like an announcement that they were engaged.

Authorities arrested both individuals on multiple charges including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, and other violations. Police recovered the banner as evidence. How the pair accessed the antenna, which rises above all public areas of the building, remains under investigation. The Empire State Building management confirmed the stunt was completely unauthorized but assured the public that tenants and visitors were never in danger.

Building Security Under Scrutiny

The incident raises questions about security protocols at one of America’s most recognizable landmarks. The Empire State Building issued a statement noting that its observation deck offers a more practical and legal way for couples to propose. This is not the first time thrill-seekers have attempted unauthorized climbs of famous structures, but the ability to reach such heights undetected points to potential security gaps. The building attracts millions of visitors annually and remains a high-profile target for stunts. Authorities have not disclosed whether additional security measures will be implemented following this breach.
