Campaign Worker ATTACKS 98-Year-Old With Metal Chair

A 27-year-old political campaign worker faces multiple felony charges after allegedly beating a 98-year-old Brooklyn resident with a broomstick and metal chair during an argument over campaign materials she was distributing in his apartment building.

Brutal Attack Over Political Disagreement

Tashara Abel was placing reelection flyers in mailboxes for Anthony Beckford, a Democratic Socialists of America member seeking reelection as a Democratic district leader, when the elderly resident confronted her. The confrontation quickly escalated into violence. Police say Abel repeatedly punched and kicked the elderly man before grabbing a broomstick and metal chair to strike him. The victim suffered minor head injuries but declined hospital transport after receiving treatment at the scene.

Surveillance cameras captured Abel leaving the building after the assault. Police released photos of the suspect, leading to her arrest. She now faces three counts of assault, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon charges. The incident occurred ahead of the June 23 primary election in which Beckford is seeking reelection as a New York State Committee Member.

Community Shock and Campaign Response

Neighbors expressed disbelief that anyone would target the longtime resident. Pierre Verna, who lives nearby, described the victim as a familiar face in the community. He told reporters that everyone in the building knows the elderly man, including delivery workers and families with children. Another neighbor questioned what could possibly justify such violence against a senior citizen, calling the attack heartbreaking and confusing.

Beckford’s campaign released a statement saying they are reviewing the incident and that the candidate personally reached out to the victim. The statement emphasized that volunteers may operate independently but anyone associated with the campaign must conduct themselves with respect and professionalism. The campaign pledged to take appropriate action if wrongdoing is confirmed and promised cooperation with authorities. The statement prioritized maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all residents.

Growing Concerns About Political Violence

The attack represents an alarming escalation in political confrontations at the grassroots level. While high-profile political violence often makes headlines, incidents involving campaign workers and ordinary citizens rarely reach this level of severity. The fact that a simple disagreement over campaign literature resulted in serious assault charges against a campaign volunteer raises questions about candidate vetting and volunteer training protocols. The case also highlights tensions surrounding political canvassing in residential buildings where residents may feel their private space is being invaded by campaign activities.

  1. All politics aside, I think this kind of assault on an elderly person should be treated as attempted murder. If you can add politics as a motive, it should be elevated to a hate crime.
