Capitola police officers responded to reports of a stabbing at Capitola Mall at approximately 12:45 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2026. Officers discovered Rachell Summers on Clares Street across the parking lot from the Macy’s west exit. Despite immediate medical aid provided by officers, followed by emergency crews from the Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County and American Medical Response, Summers succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Police found the suspect roughly half a mile away in the 1400 block of 41st Avenue shortly after the attack.
The 19-year-old male suspect remains held without bail on suspicion of murder and for allegedly committing a felony while already out on bail.
