A Georgia woman celebrating her birthday weekend survived a direct hit when a massive tree crashed onto her moving vehicle Sunday night, totaling her car but sparing her life in what she described as divine protection.
Tree Falls Without Warning
Jennifer Higginbotham was driving two friends visiting from England back to their hotel around 9 p.m. on Rockbridge Road near Lilburn when a tree still covered in green leaves suddenly fell directly onto her car. The trunk smashed through the hood and windshield, destroying the vehicle completely. Higginbotham said weather conditions were clear with no rain or wind at the time of the incident, making the collapse entirely unexpected and unexplainable.
The timing proved critical to survival. Higginbotham estimated the tree fell just three feet behind where it could have struck the passenger compartment directly. Her two passengers sought medical attention the following morning and were diagnosed with minor whiplash injuries. Higginbotham opened her door immediately after impact and called 911. Emergency crews arrived and used chainsaws to cut up the tree before the destroyed vehicle was towed from the scene.
County Property Raises Questions
The fallen tree stood on Gwinnett County property in an area with no nearby homes, according to Higginbotham. She described the incident as a complete mystery, noting the tree appeared healthy with a full canopy of leaves indicating it was not dead or diseased. Several neighbors told reporters off camera they had previously raised concerns with Gwinnett County officials about trees along Rockbridge Road, though the county has not yet responded to questions about who holds responsibility for inspecting roadside trees.
Faith And Moving Forward
Despite the traumatic experience, Higginbotham expressed gratitude for the outcome. She credited divine intervention for her survival, saying this was not the first time she had experienced such protection. While acknowledging she will likely pay closer attention to roadside trees going forward, Higginbotham said she hopes to avoid developing a lasting phobia about driving. The incident occurred during what should have been a celebratory weekend for her birthday. County officials have been asked to clarify inspection procedures and maintenance responsibility for trees along public roads but have not provided information as of this report.
