Panettiere Death Probe EXPANDS — DEA Investigates

Federal and local authorities have expanded their investigation into actress Hayden Panettiere’s death to cover multiple states, focusing on the origin of drugs that may have contributed to her passing last month in South Carolina.

Cross-Country Investigation Underway

The probe now spans both Los Angeles and South Carolina, with the Greenville City Police Department leading the effort alongside the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Panettiere, known for her roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville,” was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at a Greenville residence on August 16. First responders attempted resuscitation, but the 35-year-old actress was pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology results remain pending, and officials have not released an official cause or manner of death.

Sources familiar with the investigation told ABC News that authorities are examining street-level drug dealers who may have supplied substances to the actress. Panettiere had traveled from Los Angeles to South Carolina just one day before her death, staying temporarily at the residence where she was found. Her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were present at the scene, according to police reports.

Medication Found At Scene

The responding police officer’s report noted that Brian Hickerson showed authorities a bag containing medication Panettiere was taking. Hickerson’s attorney released a statement emphasizing that police confirmed no signs of foul play were discovered. The attorney requested respect for the ongoing investigation and Panettiere’s loved ones, declining further comment. A representative for the late actress similarly stated that nothing could be shared while the investigation continues, expressing hope that justice would be served.

History Of Substance Struggles

Before her death, Panettiere had been open about her battles with substance abuse throughout her acting career. In her memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” released in May, and during television interviews, she detailed her struggles. During an appearance on the “Tamron Hall Show” earlier this year, Panettiere described a turning point when she noticed her eyes had turned yellow and no longer recognized her own body. A doctor warned her that without stopping her substance use, she would need a liver transplant. This warning prompted her to enter a rehabilitation facility in 2020, where she sought treatment for her addiction issues.

  1. Why isn’t her horrible boyfriend and his brother are suspects? Brian has abused her for a long time. Looks like he is getting away with it. Sad.
