US YANKS Bombers From British Base After Terror Plot

The Pentagon evacuated all American bombers from a critical British airbase within hours after receiving urgent intelligence about an Iranian-backed terror plot targeting the aircraft. The rapid withdrawal from RAF Fairford marks a stunning retreat from one of America’s most strategic overseas positions.

Scramble From British Soil

A dozen B-1 bombers launched from RAF Fairford on Sunday, some taking off before aerial refueling tankers could even get airborne to support their trans-Atlantic flights. The New York Times reported that US commanders received specific threat details in the previous 24 hours, prompting the emergency evacuation. These billion-dollar aircraft represent irreplaceable military assets that are no longer in production, making their protection paramount.

The withdrawal follows a September 27 incident when British counter-terror police arrested six men, all UK nationals from London, near the Gloucestershire airbase. Authorities detained the suspects on explosives charges and suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. All six were later released on bail in what police described as an investigative strategy decision.

Iran Threat Confirmed

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated there were strong indications that Iran played a role in the airbase incident, though Tehran has denied involvement. Whitehall officials confirmed they are dealing with an ongoing high tempo of threats from Iran to the United Kingdom. They acknowledged that American airbases would logically rank high on any Iranian targeting list, and did not dispute that Washington’s bomber withdrawal directly responded to the Fairford threats.

RAF Fairford has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force for decades. In recent months, the United States has flown B-1 and B-52 bombers from the base for Middle East operations, after Britain approved American requests to use the facility for defensive strikes against Iran. The base sits near the village of Whelford in the Cotswolds region.

What This Means

The bomber evacuation removes a vital American military foothold outside continental Europe at a time when the United States is recovering from damage inflicted on its aircraft by Iranian precision strikes. While America can technically conduct strikes directly from home bases, as demonstrated in last year’s Operation Midnight Hammer, the loss of RAF Fairford as a staging point significantly reduces American military flexibility in the region. Ezra Cohen, a defense official under the first Trump administration, called the relocation a prudent decision given the unique nature and limited numbers of these strategic bombers.
