28-Year-Old MURDER — Suspect Finally Arrested

Nearly three decades after a young woman was found murdered on a rural Georgia highway, investigators have arrested a suspect in a killing that haunted Coffee County for 28 years.

Decades-Long Investigation Ends in Arrest

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested James Lawrence III, 47, on October 1, charging him with felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault in the 1998 death of Christy Dawn Myers. Lawrence, an Irwin County resident, now sits in Coffee County Jail awaiting prosecution. Myers was just 20 years old when she died from multiple stab wounds near her vehicle along the Broxton-Fitzgerald Highway on September 15, 1998.

Coffee County Sheriff’s Office immediately requested GBI assistance when Myers’ body was discovered. For nearly 28 years, investigators from the GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Douglas worked alongside local law enforcement, refusing to let the case go cold. The Irwin County Sheriff’s Office assisted in locating and apprehending Lawrence when investigators finally identified him as a suspect.

Forensic Breakthrough Identifies Suspect

According to the GBI, continued forensic testing ultimately led investigators to Lawrence. The agency did not specify which type of forensic evidence proved crucial, but modern DNA analysis techniques have solved numerous cold cases from the 1990s in recent years. The arrest represents the culmination of tireless work by multiple law enforcement agencies who kept Myers’ case active despite the passage of nearly three decades since her death.

The completed investigation file will now move to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Investigators continue seeking information from the public about Myers’ death, with tips accepted through the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Douglas or the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office. Anonymous tips can be submitted directly to the GBI.

Justice Delayed But Not Denied

Myers’ 1998 murder left her family waiting 28 years for answers. The arrest demonstrates how persistence and advancing forensic technology can bring justice even when decades have passed. Cold case investigations require extraordinary dedication from law enforcement, who must balance current cases while continuing to pursue leads in unsolved crimes. For families like Myers’, such commitment offers hope that violent crimes will not go unpunished, regardless of how much time has elapsed since the tragedy occurred.
