Arizona Mother MAULED To Death Protecting Son

Emily Panuco, an Arizona mother of two, sacrificed her life protecting her 5-year-old son from three attacking dogs outside her mother’s Southern California home, demonstrating the ultimate act of maternal courage that has left a community mourning and a family devastated.

Fatal Attack Unfolds at Family Home

The tragedy occurred when Panuco’s young son approached a box containing puppies near the California residence. Police reports indicate that three adult dogs suddenly lunged at the child without warning. Panuco immediately jumped between the animals and her son, using her own body as a shield against the vicious assault. The attack proved fatal for the devoted mother, who sustained numerous bite wounds across her body. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Panuco was pronounced dead before transport. Her son suffered two severe bites during the incident and required hospital treatment, though he was later released to family members.

Dogs Euthanized Following Attack

Local animal control officers responded to the scene and took custody of all three adult dogs responsible for the fatal mauling. Authorities decided to euthanize the animals following standard protocols for attacks resulting in human fatalities. The Colorado River Sheriff’s Department continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including questions about the dogs’ ownership, vaccination status, and any prior history of aggressive behavior. Officials have not released details about what breed of dogs were involved or whether charges will be filed against any property owners.

Community Rallies Behind Grieving Family

Panuco worked as a librarian at the CRITT library, where colleagues and patrons remembered her dedication to children and families. A GoFundMe campaign established to cover funeral expenses and support her surviving family quickly gained community support. The fundraiser describes Panuco as a devoted mother whose love for her family defined everything she accomplished. She leaves behind her husband and two young children, including the son whose life she saved through her final selfless act. The tragedy highlights the unpredictable dangers posed by aggressive animals and the instinctive protective response of parents facing immediate threats to their children’s safety.

  1. So, so, so sorry. I am too angry to say anything except who are the owners and what breed of dogs are they? The article said, ‘a box of puppies’, then where did the 3 adult dogs come from?,!!?

  2. This incident should never have happened if the mother was mindful of her child and what he was doing. This kind of thing with mothers and their children is all too common. Terrible that the mother died.

    • Neither the mother or child were culpable in this terrible event. The problem was not the puppies- the problem was the unsupervised dogs. In order to understand what even 3 dogs can do think of gang members…..they can do unthinkable damage. I guarantee that the three dogs had become a nuisance. The dog that sleeps at the foot of my bed at night is not the same creature as one that runs in a pack.

  3. So sad! This woman was only twenty-six years old, two small children, and a HERO! A Mother’s Love has no limits! God Bless your Family, and rest safely in the arms of Jesus.
