A Princess Cruises vessel discovered and recovered five deceased individuals floating in the Mediterranean Sea while sailing to Spain, authorities confirmed. The victims are believed to be migrants who spent several days adrift before being found by the ship’s crew.
Discovery 63 Miles From Spanish Island
Crew members aboard the Sapphire Princess spotted an orange inflatable lifejacket in the water on April 21 while traveling to Cartagena, Spain. The ship had departed from Civitavecchia, Italy, two days earlier on April 19 for a scheduled two-week cruise to Copenhagen. After observing the lifejacket approximately 63 miles southwest of Formentera island, the vessel altered course to investigate the unusual sighting in international waters.
The ship deployed its Fast Rescue Boat to retrieve the bodies. Princess Cruises confirmed the five individuals were neither passengers nor employees from the vessel. The cruise line coordinated recovery efforts with Spain’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Center throughout the operation. Spain’s Maritime Safety and Rescue Society stated the victims likely came from a small boat and had been in the water for multiple days before discovery.
Cruise Line Responds To Tragedy
Princess Cruises released a statement expressing condolences and praising crew members for their quick response. The company thanked staff for their swift action in rendering assistance during the unexpected situation. The Sapphire Princess continued its journey to Cartagena with the recovered bodies, where authorities took custody for investigation and identification. The cruise line did not release additional details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths or the nationality of the victims.
Second Princess Ship Rescue In Months
This incident marks the second rescue operation by a Princess Cruises vessel in recent months. In February, the Regal Princess rescued four people from a distressed small boat during a Caribbean cruise. The Mediterranean continues to see dangerous migration attempts, with thousands attempting the crossing annually in unsafe vessels. Maritime law requires ships to render assistance to those in distress at sea, regardless of circumstances. The discovery highlights ongoing humanitarian concerns in Mediterranean waters, where rescue organizations report increasing fatalities among migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings to reach European shores in search of better opportunities.
