American Flag FLIES Upside Down — Outrage Erupts

An American flag flew upside down for an extended period during a community celebration in St. Cloud, Minnesota, just one day before the nation’s 250th anniversary, sparking outrage among residents and local officials who question whether the display was truly accidental.

Flag Displayed Upside Down During Event

On July 3rd at 5:29 p.m., the St. Cloud Police Department received calls reporting the American flag flying upside down on a city flagpole at Lake George Park Pavilion during a celebration for Somali Independence Day. Video footage obtained by Fox News Digital confirmed the flag remained inverted while approximately 500 attendees enjoyed festivities. Police corrected the flag without objection, and event organizers claimed the mistake was unintentional.

St. Cloud City Councilman Scott Brodeen expressed skepticism about the explanation, noting numerous local politicians delivered speeches at the event while organizations including the AFL-CIO and Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party maintained booths. Brodeen questioned how hundreds of attendees, organizers, and elected officials failed to notice the flag’s improper display during a celebration on the eve of America’s 250th birthday.

Community Members Demand Accountability

Kathy Neumeister, a Sauk Rapids resident whose husband served 36 years in the military, rushed to the event after seeing videos circulating online. She confronted attendees and called the mayor’s office, rejecting explanations that a city staffer made an innocent mistake. Neumeister found it implausible that trained city employees wouldn’t recognize the proper orientation of the American flag.

The incident gained significant traction on social media before organizers issued apologies nearly a week later. St. Cloud Mayor Jake Anderson acknowledged community concerns and stated the city takes proper flag display seriously. Anderson noted the city had worked with this event organizer for over 11 years without previous incidents.

Questions Remain About Oversight

Councilman Brodeen emphasized his frustration that politicians campaigning during the nation’s birthday weekend remained silent about the flag’s improper display. He stressed the flag represents fundamental American values and questioned why those seeking public office didn’t immediately address the situation. The controversy highlighted tensions between maintaining cultural celebrations and respecting national symbols, particularly during America’s semiquincentennial commemoration. City officials promised to ensure proper protocols are followed at future events.
