The Trump administration has ordered U.S. embassies and consulates across the globe to immediately postpone immigrant visa interviews while consular officers undergo mandatory training on evaluating whether applicants might become dependent on public assistance after entering the United States.

Public Charge Training Mandated

The State Department directed all diplomatic posts to reschedule immigrant visa interviews until officers complete specialized training on public-charge determinations. Under federal immigration law, officials can deny visa applications if they determine an applicant is likely to become dependent on certain forms of government assistance after arrival. The training initiative launched in early August aims to ensure evaluations are conducted comprehensively and consistently across all posts worldwide.

Most embassies and consulates are expected to complete the training sessions this week. However, the State Department has not announced when affected applicants will receive rescheduled interview dates. Thousands of applicants have received cancellation emails without immediate rescheduling instructions, creating widespread uncertainty among those who had reached the interview stage of the application process.

Broader Immigration Crackdown Expands

The visa interview pause represents the latest action in President Trump’s comprehensive immigration enforcement agenda, which has extended beyond illegal immigration into legal pathways. The administration has implemented higher fees for certain work visas and established new time limits for foreign students and journalists remaining in the country. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott announced that more than 100,000 visas have been revoked through the department’s continuous vetting program, with driving under the influence convictions among the primary criminal offenses triggering action.

The administration announced Monday it is preparing to revoke business and tourism visas for up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are seeking asylum in the United States. This action would represent the largest mass visa revocation in American history. Additionally, the administration has pursued visa revocations based on political activity and speech, including actions targeting anti-Israel activists, prompting legal challenges alleging violations of constitutional free-speech and due-process protections.

Legal Challenges Mount

The immigration agenda has encountered significant legal obstacles in federal courts. On Friday, a federal judge struck down a State Department policy that had suspended immigrant visa issuance for applicants from 75 countries. The court ruled that Secretary of State Marco Rubio exceeded his statutory authority in implementing the suspension. The decision adds to mounting judicial scrutiny of the administration’s immigration enforcement measures, which critics argue overreach executive authority while supporters maintain they strengthen national security and protect American workers from economic competition.
