Stepdad’s Unusual Discipline GOES Viral

A stepfather’s creative approach to discipline has ignited nationwide debate after security footage of him making his 9-year-old son do push-ups for disrespecting his mother spread across social media platforms.

The Viral Discipline Moment

Katie and Dustin Maletich were at home when their son Tommy told his mother to “chill” during a conversation. Dustin, hearing the disrespectful comment from another room, immediately intervened with an unconventional consequence. The security camera captured Dustin calmly instructing Tommy to drop and perform push-ups, followed by a discussion about respect and a heartfelt apology to his mother.

“When you demonstrate the inability to control your actions, I think a physical consequence not only fixes that, helps you regulate, but it also reaffirms that you are in control of your body,” Dustin explained during their Fox & Friends First appearance. The family initially shared the footage with their small social media following, intending only friends and family to witness what Katie called a “tender, special moment.”

Expert Opinion and Public Response

The video quickly gained millions of views, generating passionate responses from parents nationwide. Educational psychologist Dr. Michele Borba praised the discipline method as “right on the mark” but questioned the wisdom of sharing private family moments publicly. Critics argued that connecting exercise with punishment could create negative associations with physical activity, while supporters applauded Dustin for defending his wife and teaching accountability.

Parenting Philosophy Behind the Method

The Maletich family, raising four children in their blended household, emphasizes “correlated actions” as consequences for inappropriate behavior. Katie defended their approach, hoping other parents might find inspiration in their real-time problem-solving. “I thought maybe if other parents could see how this unfolds in real time, it could inspire them,” she said, adding that she wanted to help parents “come up with better solutions to losing it on their kids.” The incident has sparked broader conversations about modern parenting techniques, social media boundaries, and effective discipline strategies that build character while maintaining family respect.

  1. Kudos to this dad! These kids have no idea what it means to be respectful. My dad would have spanked me and grounded me for a month. We need more parents like this to teach discipline, respect and that life isn’t fair. Otherwise, when they get out in the real world, they are going to mouth off to someone and they might get more and pushups!!! Keep up the great job dad!!!!
