A 75-year-old Tennessee physician died Monday morning when his single-engine aircraft struck a power line and burst into flames moments after takeoff from Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville, Florida.
Engine Failure Seconds After Takeoff
Dr. Michael Hood departed the airport at approximately 10:16 a.m. in his Mooney M20F aircraft when investigators believe he encountered sudden engine failure. The Tennessee doctor, who practiced medicine in the Newport area, attempted an emergency return to the airport but collided with overhead power lines during the maneuver. The impact ignited a fire that consumed the aircraft before emergency responders could reach the scene.
Titusville Fire Chief John Hustolis confirmed Hood was the sole occupant aboard the aircraft. “There was only one soul on board at the time of the plane crash,” Hustolis told reporters. “The incident command confirmed with the tower that there was only one patient shortly thereafter.” The fire department arrived to find the wreckage already engulfed in flames.
Investigation Underway Into Mechanical Failure
The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched investigators to examine the crash site and determine the exact cause of the engine malfunction. Federal officials will analyze flight track data, air traffic control recordings, and maintenance records for the 1966 Mooney M20F. The aircraft had arrived in Titusville around 12:23 p.m. the previous day, according to flight tracking website FlightAware, though the origin of that flight remains unclear.
The small single-engine plane represents a popular model among private pilots for cross-country travel. NTSB investigators typically spend several months reconstructing mechanical failures and pilot actions before issuing preliminary findings. The agency’s final report determining probable cause could take more than a year to complete.
Experienced Pilot’s Final Flight
Hood maintained an active medical practice serving patients in the Newport, Tennessee region before the fatal accident. The 75-year-old pilot’s experience level and total flight hours have not been disclosed by investigators. Engine failures during the critical takeoff phase present pilots with limited options, particularly at low altitudes where insufficient time exists to restart engines or select emergency landing sites. The decision to return to the airport rather than attempt a forced landing ahead represents standard emergency procedure, though power lines near airports create additional hazards during such maneuvers.
