Vice President JD Vance returned to combative social media tactics by publicly mocking Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen’s weight after Thiessen dismissed young Americans complaining about rising food prices, reigniting questions about internal Republican divisions on kitchen-table economics.
Personal Attack Sparks Broader Economic Debate
The confrontation erupted when Thiessen told students complaining about expensive burritos to “cry me a river,” arguing their campus meal plans already cover cafeteria food. Vance responded with a personal jab on X, stating: “I’m surprised to hear Mark say this. If you’ve ever met him in person, it’s quite obvious the man has never missed a burrito.” The exchange highlighted growing tensions between traditional free-market conservatives and populist Republicans over how to address voter concerns about affordability.
Thiessen, known for having President Trump’s ear and frequently criticizing Vance on Iran policy, sparked the controversy by dismissing Turning Point USA’s Andrew Kolvet discussion of a college student’s burrito price complaints. The personal nature of Vance’s counterattack marked a return to his earlier social media behavior after months of restraint.
Real Inflation Hits American Wallets
The burrito battle reflects genuine economic pressures facing Americans. A Chipotle burrito with chicken, black beans, roasted chili-corn salsa, and brown rice currently costs $9.65 before taxes in Illinois, up from approximately $6.50 in 2015. A viral Reddit post last year showed two chicken bowls and one chicken burrito with guacamole costing $21.45 in 2015 would now cost $30.80 before taxes, a 44% increase.
The dollar has lost significant purchasing power, with one dollar from 2019 now equivalent to $1.33 today, representing 33% cumulative inflation over seven years. Current inflation runs at 3.5% annually through June, well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Housing, college tuition, healthcare, and energy costs have simultaneously soared, with 57% of Americans calling affordability a full-blown crisis according to Guardian polling.
Political Calculation Behind the Clash
White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and other advisors previously urged Vance to reduce social media confrontations, fearing he appeared too abrasive, according to New York Times reporting. The White House denied that account. Vance claimed he removed X from his phone for Lent but wanted to reinstall it to hear “unfiltered raw opinions” as a political leader. His decision to resume public fights comes as he acknowledges spending considerable time reflecting on difficulties maintaining the Republican coalition.
Traditional conservatives argue Americans need better personal budgeting and responsibility during expensive times, while blaming populist policies like tariffs for higher prices. Populist conservatives counter that something fundamentally wrong exists when basic goods become unaffordable, criticizing traditionalists as dismissive of legitimate concerns. Democrats have seized affordability as their primary weapon against Republicans heading into midterm elections, making the internal Republican debate over messaging particularly consequential.

The price increases that everyone in this Country has endured the past 7 years STARTED DURING THE BIDEN ADMINSTRATION. So, before you all get your panties in an uproar just realize that President Trump DID NOT CAUSE ALL OF THIS. It was Leftist Woke Democrat Failed Policies that got us all to where we see ourselves. President Trump has Created Jobs, Industry, brought Investment to our Country, put Iran on its Heels, given us Tax Breaks, And He continues to Defend Our Rights As Americans. He has Closed our Borders to those who would Illegally abuse our Laws, Kill our Citizens, and undermine our giving Nature. So Again, keep your focus on why we are here, we are All Americans and we must also defend our Country, And we must put the “Correct people in places of Power”, Not Communists who would Ruin what our Sons and Daughters have Died to Preserve.
Trump hasn’t done a thing to help relieve this problem either. His comment I believe was that he wasn’t concerned about it. Is this the people’s President or the President’s President
100% CORRECT!!!!!
Eating at Chipotle or ANY restaurant/fast food is NOT BASIC! Cooking at home IS BASIC. Get back to basics! If need be, beans and rice are complete proteins and cheap.
100% CORRECT!!!!!!
These were SPECIALTY Burritos. Built on a 12″ tortilla and filled with whatever you like and the list is long. When filled to capacity you can NOT bite into it totally as it does not FIT into your mouth. I know because I had one in Austin, Texas. They are worth much more than what is typically charged. This college student expects everything for nothing. He needs to learn the value of budgeting and NOT overindulge.
Trump inherited a financial MESS when he took office and if you think that mess can be fixed in a short time, you are WRONG! Plus it’s taken a lot of money to get it all fixed. We are ALL payng the price for having a president that wasn’t all there and if a democrat should be elected for president again…BE PREPARED because they want everything to be given to us FREE and nothing is free! We will all me paying more.
