Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his estranged wife before taking his own life in their Annandale home, just two weeks before a court-ordered deadline requiring him to move out during divorce proceedings.
Tragedy Unfolds in Washington Suburb
Police discovered the bodies of Fairfax, 47, and his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, 49, early Thursday morning after their teenage son called 911. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis confirmed that Justin Fairfax shot his wife in the basement before going upstairs and killing himself. Both of the couple’s teenage children were home at the time of the deaths. The couple had been separated for nearly two years but continued living under the same roof during contentious divorce proceedings.
Court Documents Reveal Mounting Troubles
A judge overseeing the divorce case ordered Justin Fairfax to vacate the family home by the end of April, noting that tensions had remained extremely high for an extended period. Court filings revealed deeply troubling behavior patterns, with the judge describing Fairfax’s isolation, daily drinking, and withdrawal from family life as manifestations of fatalism and hopelessness. Cerina Fairfax testified that her husband’s living space was cluttered with empty wine bottles and dirty laundry. Most disturbingly, court records showed he purchased a handgun in 2022 using money designated for their children’s horseback riding lessons.
Career Collapse Following Scandal
Fairfax, once considered a rising Democratic star, never recovered from sexual assault allegations that surfaced in 2019. The scandal forced his resignation as partner at a prestigious law firm, leaving him largely unemployable according to close friends. Court documents revealed significant financial problems, including an IRS tax lien exceeding ninety-one thousand dollars that was eventually resolved in 2021. Friends told reporters they repeatedly urged Fairfax to seek professional help and move out of the family home, but believed he lacked the financial resources to do so.
Warning Signs Went Unheeded
Virginia journalist Sophia Nelson, who described Fairfax as a close friend, confirmed that multiple people in his inner circle expressed concern about his mental state. She revealed there had been discussions about suicidal thoughts among worried friends and family members. Police Chief Davis disclosed that officers responded to the home in January after Fairfax claimed his wife assaulted him, but security cameras she had installed proved the alleged assault never occurred. Davis also confirmed that Fairfax was recently served with court paperwork scheduling his next appearance before the tragedy unfolded.
