A Southern California LGBTQ advocacy group is calling for a boycott of a new Harry Potter-themed train attraction, claiming ticket purchases financially support author J.K. Rowling, whose stance on transgender issues has sparked years of fierce debate.
Perris Pride Targets New Attraction
The Southern California Railway Museum in Perris launched Harry Potter: A Hogwarts Express Adventure this summer, billing it as the first interactive theatrical train ride of its kind in America. Ashley Williamson, lead director of R.I.S.E. Perris Pride, told the Los Angeles Times that any Harry Potter merchandise purchases ultimately benefit Rowling, who has faced criticism over her comments about transgender women and support for organizations opposing certain transgender rights policies.
Williamson, who identifies as nonbinary under the transgender umbrella, described the situation in stark terms. The group leader claimed openly LGBTQ individuals in Perris face regular hostility, including slurs and vandalism targeting them and their children. Williamson characterized urging people to avoid Harry Potter products as the most effective action available to protect their community.
Entertainment Industry Responds
Kathleen Wallis, vice president of global themed entertainment at Warner Bros. Discovery, emphasized the company’s focus on creating new experiences for franchise fans. Wallis noted that many supporters, including her own children, grew up with the stories and enjoy experiencing them in fresh ways. Jarrette Ireland, vice president and general manager of Colorado-based Rail Events Inc., which operates the attraction, said the company welcomes all visitors regardless of background.
The hourlong production transforms the Perris museum into the fictional Platform 9¾, where guests board a moving train alongside actors portraying students from all four Hogwarts houses. The experience features live performances, audience participation, singalongs, spellcasting and encounters with magical creatures. Tickets range from approximately $72 to $93 per person.
Ongoing Controversy
Rowling remains one of entertainment’s most controversial figures due to her public statements about transgender issues. Critics accuse the bestselling author of promoting anti-trans views through social media posts and using her wealth to support organizations seeking to restrict transgender women’s participation in certain areas of public life. Rowling has consistently rejected accusations of being anti-trans, stating she supports women’s sex-based rights. The boycott effort represents the latest flashpoint in the ongoing cultural debate surrounding the beloved franchise and its creator’s outspoken positions on gender identity issues.
