A Middletown, Ohio police officer was convicted of two dereliction of duty counts after allowing a handcuffed 15-year-old boy to be whipped with a belt by a family member who had no legal authority to administer such punishment.
Officer Defends Actions in Emotional Testimony
Officer Jamie Patterson sobbed on the witness stand Thursday as she defended her decision to permit the teenager’s whipping in January. Patterson told the court she believed she was helping the troubled youth whose family and the justice system had failed him. She claimed she recommended corporal punishment and remained present to ensure it was done correctly and lawfully. The officer insisted she acted in good faith with genuine intentions to help the boy.
Patterson had responded to the grandmother’s 911 call after the teen got into a fight over electronic devices that turned physical. The incident marked the second consecutive day Patterson was called to the residence for behavioral issues involving the same teenager. Body camera footage captured Patterson handcuffing the boy and questioning the grandmother about corporal punishment before the grandmother summoned her ex-husband to administer the whipping.
Legal Authority and Evidence Present Problems
Prosecutors argued Patterson violated her duties because Ohio law permits corporal punishment only by parents or legal guardians. The man who whipped the teenager was the grandmother’s ex-husband, giving him no legal standing to administer such discipline. Patterson’s body camera partially recorded the whipping, though she turned away and muted the device during the actual incident. After the punishment, Patterson praised the man’s old-school approach and told the handcuffed teen his grandfather was allowed to administer corporal punishment.
The teenager, now 16, faced charges of domestic violence and unruly behavior from the incident. Medical evidence showed visible marks from the belt whipping, though prosecutors noted he received no treatment for his injuries. The World Health Organization classifies corporal punishment as potentially cruel and degrading, capable of causing both physical and mental harm to children.
Consequences and Department Response
Patterson faces up to 90 days in jail and a maximum $750 fine for each of the two counts. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 25. The Middletown Police Department confirmed Patterson remains on unpaid leave following Thursday’s guilty verdict. The case raises questions about law enforcement discretion in domestic situations and proper protocols when responding to family disturbances involving minors. Patterson’s emotional defense centered on her belief that traditional discipline methods could redirect a teenager she viewed as failed by multiple systems designed to help him.
Spare the rod; spoil the child. Anyone remember that? Hmmmm? He probably deserved more than just what he got. Officer should never have handled it in that manner but she did the best she could do and made a righteous decision I say…
Agreed! I got hit with a belt, when i was young…and never resented my father. He would line the five of us up and say, “I don’t know who is guilty, so you are all getting it.” None of us wanted to admit being guilty singularly…and would take our punishment together. .
Should happen a lot more legally administered on the spot, and the goddam heathen courts stay the hell out of it….

If my father had of spared the rod and spoiled the child I would probably have been in prison, jail, hell or at least sleeping under the bridge. Being of the old-school, I did what I learned from my father and applied the rod of correction to my son when needed, who now at fifty-seven years of age pastors a very successful Baptist church. Our two daughters got the same love and biblical discipline as my son. My wife and I just celebrated sixty-two years of marriage, and counting children, grandchildren and great grandchildren we are a clan of thirty-nine people. Not one of them is jail, on illegal drugs, or running from the law. They all have jobs and attend good churches.

The reason kids are violent thugs now a days is because they never get taught otherwise! They’re bratty criminals now that run a muck. Let people discipline their kids and there wouldn’t be any of the riots where they’re on the streets beating each other. Didn’t see this before spanking your kids became illegal.
