Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed confronts intense scrutiny after records revealed over 4,680 dogs and cats were euthanized at Detroit’s animal shelter during his tenure as city health director, with a former employee calling the facility a dog slaughterhouse.
Whistleblower Allegations Surface
Former Detroit Animal Control officer Brittany Roberts filed a whistleblower lawsuit in October 2015, alleging animals died from inadequate food and medical care in filthy conditions. Roberts, who started working at the shelter in March 2015, described finding dead animals in cages each morning before feeding time. She accused the agency of neglect and mistreatment, claiming dogs were rarely euthanized properly but instead suffered until death. Roberts also alleged she faced harassment and termination after reporting the problems to supervisors.
The lawsuit landed the same month the city transferred Animal Control from the Detroit Police Department to El-Sayed’s Health Department. Roberts told reporters she felt embarrassed being part of a team that played a role in so many dogs dying in their cages, highlighting systemic failures at the facility.
Political Fallout Intensifies
Republican opponent Mike Rogers attacked El-Sayed on social media, stating Detroiters could not trust him with their pets while he asks Michigan voters to trust him with their families. Even former First Lady Jill Biden’s press secretary Michael LaRosa publicly questioned the allegations, saying he did not want to believe the reports were true. El-Sayed won a contested primary against Representative Haley Stevens before facing renewed attention on his Detroit record heading into the general election.
Numbers Tell Complicated Story
Detroit Animal Care and Control’s live-release rate stood at just 20 to 26 percent when El-Sayed took control in late 2015. Best Friends Animal Society data showed 2,260 animals were euthanized in 2015 alone, including 1,988 dogs and 272 cats. However, the facility’s live-release rate climbed to approximately 61 to 62 percent by late 2016 after implementing changes. The El-Sayed campaign argues the raw euthanasia numbers obscure significant improvements made under difficult inherited conditions. The city scrapped a no-adoption policy, partnered with rescue organizations, hired a new director in December 2015, and eventually moved operations into a larger donated facility.

As a dog lover I hold a great deal of contempt for that inhuman scum.
I would like to know what the penalty is for this individual killing all those animals. Is he getting off scot-free? Does no one suffer from doing a terrible wrong like this and admits guilt?
