Walmart has pulled nearly 4.5 million grill brushes from shelves after federal safety officials warned that tiny metal bristles could break off during use, stick to food, and cause internal injuries requiring emergency surgery.
Five Years of Sales Now Under Recall
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on October 1, covering five different Expert Grill brand products sold since January 2021. The brushes, priced between one dollar and twenty-eight dollars, were available at Walmart stores nationwide and through the retailer’s website. The recalled items include handheld brushes, long-handled models with scrapers, a three-head stainless steel bristle brush, and a ten-piece barbecue tool set. All feature either black plastic or stainless steel handles.
Federal officials emphasized the hidden danger these products pose. Small wire bristles can detach during normal cleaning and remain on grill surfaces, where they become nearly invisible. When food is placed on the contaminated grill, these bristles can stick to burgers, steaks, or vegetables. If swallowed, the sharp metal pieces can puncture the digestive tract, requiring surgical intervention to remove them and repair internal damage.
No Injuries Reported Yet
Walmart confirmed that no injuries or incidents have been documented so far, but the Arkansas-based retail giant acted swiftly once the risk was identified. A company spokesperson stated that customer health and safety remains their highest priority and that Walmart cooperated fully with federal regulators and the Chinese manufacturer to remove all affected products from store shelves immediately.
Consumers who purchased any of the recalled brushes can identify them using model numbers listed in the official recall notice. Walmart urges anyone who owns these products to stop using them immediately, regardless of how long ago they were purchased. The company offers full refunds to anyone who returns the brushes to their nearest Walmart location, no receipt required.
What Families Should Do Now
Americans who grill regularly should check their outdoor cooking supplies today. With grilling season still active in many parts of the country, these dangerous brushes may currently be in use at homes across America. Consumers can contact Walmart directly at 800-925-6278 between seven in the morning and nine at night Central Time, Monday through Friday. Additional information is available on the company’s dedicated product recall website. This recall serves as a reminder that even routine household items can pose unexpected safety risks to families.

While virtually every BBQ guru in the world has been telling folks to NOT use wire brushes to clean grills, smokers, or any other cooking equipment, for YEARS, the money-grubbing retailers in our land have continued to profit from selling wire brushes to us, because “Why freaking not?” this tale only mentions Wally World, but not Home Depot, nor Lowe’s, nor Target, nor blah, blah, blah! Their bottom line is, apparently more important to them than our health & well-being.
