Pacific Coast Producers has issued a recall affecting more than 44,000 cans of Great Value Fruit Cocktail sold at Walmart stores across seven states due to potential lead contamination, marking the latest food safety concern for American families.
Scope of the Recall
The recall covers 1,836 cases of Great Value Fruit Cocktail in Fruit Juice from Concentrate packaged in 15-ounce cans, with each case containing 24 individual cans. The affected products bear UPC code 078742369570, lot code 6FCB 04 C2263, and display a best-by date of September 1, 2027. Walmart stores in Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wyoming distributed the recalled fruit cocktail.
The Food and Drug Administration classified this as a Class II recall on October 20, following the company’s initial action on October 1. This classification indicates that exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, though the probability of serious consequences remains remote. The agency identified elevated lead levels as the contamination concern.
Walmart’s Response
Walmart moved swiftly to address the safety issue after receiving notification. A company spokesperson emphasized that safety represents a top priority for the retail giant. The company removed affected products from store shelves and implemented sales blocks at checkout registers and through online platforms. Walmart confirmed it maintains close working relationships with suppliers as they investigate recall-related issues and determine root causes.
Broader Safety Concerns
This recall follows another recent Walmart product safety action involving nearly 4.5 million Expert Grill brushes. The Consumer Product Safety Commission raised concerns that wire bristles could detach during cleaning, potentially lodging on grill surfaces or contaminating food. These consecutive recalls underscore the ongoing challenges retailers face in maintaining product safety standards across diverse product categories.
What Consumers Should Know
Families who purchased the affected fruit cocktail should check their pantries for matching product codes and best-by dates. Lead contamination poses particular risks to children and pregnant women, making prompt identification crucial. Consumers can return recalled products to Walmart stores for full refunds. The recall demonstrates the FDA’s continued vigilance in monitoring food safety and protecting American families from potential health hazards in everyday grocery products.
