Trump to Award Medal — SLAMS Hall of Fame

President Trump announced he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former MLB pitcher Roger Clemens at a San Antonio campaign rally, while criticizing Baseball Hall of Fame voters for keeping the seven-time Cy Young Award winner out of Cooperstown over unproven steroid allegations.

Presidential Honor Announced at Rally

Trump brought Clemens onstage Wednesday at the Freeman Coliseum during a campaign event for Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections. The 64-year-old Houston resident and University of Texas alum appeared visibly stunned by the announcement. Clemens told the crowd the honor surpasses anything from his 24-year playing career, which spanned from 1984 to 2007 with the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros. He recorded 354 wins across those seasons, cementing his status among baseball’s greatest pitchers.

The former pitcher praised Trump during his remarks, saying no other president could match this recognition. Clemens joked that Trump knew his statistics so well he could serve as his agent if he decided to return from retirement. The President’s third visit to Texas in 30 days focused on supporting Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton and other conservative candidates in upcoming elections.

Trump Defends Against Drug Allegations

Trump directly addressed the performance-enhancing drug allegations that have blocked Clemens from Hall of Fame induction since he became eligible early last decade. The President told the crowd he plans to contact the baseball commissioner about the situation. Trump emphasized that Clemens never admitted to wrongdoing and investigators found no concrete evidence against him. He dismissed concerns by calling Clemens a physical monster who achieved success through natural ability and hard work rather than banned substances.

The allegations stem from the Mitchell Report and testimony linking Clemens to performance-enhancing drugs during his career. Despite winning seven Cy Young Awards and compiling Hall of Fame-worthy statistics, voters have consistently denied him entry into Cooperstown. Trump characterized this exclusion as ridiculous given Clemens’s extraordinary record and lack of definitive proof regarding drug use.

Political Endorsements in Texas

Clemens joins other prominent Texas sports figures making political endorsements this month. Former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy White endorsed Ken Paxton in the Senate race last week, criticizing Democratic opponent James Talarico as untrustworthy. These endorsements reflect Republican efforts to mobilize conservative voters through celebrity athlete support ahead of critical midterm contests that could reshape the Senate’s partisan balance.
