A 75-year-old Brooklyn grandmother was brutally beaten by a dog walker after asking her to clean up pet waste outside her Crown Heights home, and only a quick-thinking Navy veteran neighbor prevented the attack from turning deadly.
Vicious Assault Caught on Camera
Linda Scott was repeatedly punched in the face and knocked to the ground on Monday morning on President Street near Troy Avenue. Ring camera footage captured the attacker, wearing pigtails, continuing to punch and stomp on Scott’s head even as the elderly woman lay defenseless on her front lawn. The unprovoked violence erupted just after 9 a.m. when Scott asked two women to pick up their dogs’ waste from her property.
Mr. Barnett, a 37-year-old train conductor and Navy veteran, had just returned from the gym when he noticed the confrontation escalating. He immediately recognized the danger when one woman in red approached Scott aggressively. Barnett rushed from his car, pulled the attacker off the grandmother, and secured the property gate while attempting to restore order. Scott was transported to One Brooklyn Health-Interfaith Medical Center in stable condition.
Community Hero Rejects Praise
Barnett downplayed his heroic intervention, stating his military and law enforcement background simply taught him to do what’s right. He described Scott as a community staple who has lived in the neighborhood for years. The veteran hopes the attacker turns herself in and learns from this incident. He emphasized the assault could have been avoided through simple conversation, expressing concern about what this violence signals for future generations.
Dispute Over Property Maintenance
Before the attack, one woman accused Scott of throwing ammonia on her dog. Scott’s son Matthew confirmed his mother pours ammonia on a vacant lot next to their home to combat odors from pet waste left by irresponsible dog owners who refuse to clean up after their animals. He insisted she never used the cleaning fluid as a weapon. Scott told reporters the young woman had no business attacking anyone, especially an elderly person. The assailant remained at large as of Friday, with police continuing their investigation into the incident.
