A Florida man vanished on Valentine’s Day and spent days buried up to his shoulders in quicksand-like mud without food or water before rescuers pulled him to safety in a dramatic two-hour operation that highlighted the critical importance of family vigilance during mental health crises.

Andrew Giddens, 36, from Jacksonville, was discovered Thursday evening at a Vulcan Materials Company site east of Melrose by Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies. The mud had consumed him to his shoulders, leaving him virtually invisible beneath the grass line surrounding the borrow pit. His camouflaged position made detection nearly impossible until searchers located him after his family reported him missing weeks earlier.

Rescue crews from four fire departments battled unstable ground conditions that threatened to trap responders alongside the victim. Deputies initially attempted rope extraction but switched to ladders, pallets, and wooden boards when the quicksand refused to release its grip. The Palatka Fire Department reported Giddens had endured freezing temperatures during his multi-day ordeal. After more than two hours of painstaking work, crews freed him at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Mental Health Crisis Behind Disappearance

Giddens vanished February 14 after his family reported he became severely depressed following a recent relationship breakup. The sheriff’s office had located his abandoned vehicle on February 23, nine days before discovering him trapped in the mud. Deputies had previously encountered Giddens trespassing at a different Vulcan Materials Company location in 2023, establishing a pattern of concerning behavior.

Authorities transported Giddens by air ambulance to a trauma center in critical condition, though he remained conscious and able to communicate with rescuers throughout the extraction. The sheriff’s office announced it would not pursue trespassing charges against him due to his mental health circumstances.
