Elderly Driver STRUGGLE SETS Off Reaction Online

A Tennessee retiree forced to work as a DoorDash driver at 78 years old received nearly $500,000 from strangers after his struggling delivery was captured on doorbell camera, highlighting the financial crisis facing American seniors unable to afford basic necessities in retirement.

Doorbell Video Captures Elderly Driver’s Struggle

Richard Pulley was recorded delivering a Starbucks order to Brittany Smith’s Manchester, Tennessee home on Tuesday morning. The video showed the 78-year-old slowly walking up the pathway and hesitating before climbing the porch steps. Smith watched the footage and immediately set out to locate the elderly delivery driver, determined to help after witnessing his obvious difficulty with the physically demanding work.

Family’s Financial Hardship Revealed

Internet users quickly identified Pulley, who revealed he and his wife Brenda, married 56 years, have been working DoorDash deliveries together for over a year. Brenda was fired from her job through no fault of her own, forcing the couple to supplement their single income. With thousands of dollars in annual medical expenses, Brenda drives while Richard handles the drop-offs. Pulley explained they had no choice but to work, saying the lost income meant they needed to push forward or face mounting bills leading to even more expensive hospital visits.

Overwhelming Generosity From Americans

Smith created a GoFundMe campaign to help Richard return to retirement. By Friday, the fundraiser raised nearly $500,000 from donors across the country. Smith met with the Pulleys at a local burger restaurant Thursday to show them the outpouring of support. The couple expressed shock at the generosity from complete strangers. Richard stated the difficulty in believing so many people would help those they have never met, adding the funds removed tremendous pressure and made life livable again.

Growing Pattern of Elderly Americans Returning to Work

The Pulley case mirrors a December incident where 88-year-old Army veteran Ed Bambas received over $1.7 million after being found working 40-hour weeks at a Michigan Meijer grocery store. Bambas lost his pension and health insurance while caring for his dying wife. These cases expose the financial vulnerability facing American retirees who spent decades working, only to find themselves unable to afford basic living expenses and medical care in their golden years without returning to physically demanding jobs.

  1. At 90 and still working, I know the difficulty the Pulley’s and we elderly folks are having just existing these days. Seems prices keep going up drastically every year. Sure makes it difficult to keep up for retirees.

  2. I’m still doing at 78 what I like doing and even get paid handsomely for it. However, I never considered doing it a burden. While you don’t have a right to other people’s earnings because you failed to provide for it yourself, either by saving or raising kids that care for you in your old age, it is heartwarming to see that there is in our society enough compassion to help those who can’t help themselves.
