An 18-year-old Long Island teen stands accused of brutally murdering his grandmother’s fiancé in a predawn attack that left a family shattered and searching for answers about how mental illness and violence collided in their East Northport home.

The Deadly Attack

Noel Bermudez-Chin faced a judge Monday after prosecutors said he threw scalding hot oil and water on 61-year-old Joseph Falvo as the man slept on the living room couch around 3:45 a.m. Saturday. The teen then allegedly stabbed Falvo multiple times in the back, neck, and chest, killing him. Bermudez-Chin called 911 himself to report what happened, according to prosecutors, and was arrested shortly after officers arrived at the scene.

The victim’s death has left the family devastated on multiple levels. Cecilia Bermudez, the teen’s grandmother and Falvo’s fiancée, told reporters she is consumed with pain and anger. Glenda Arroyo, the teen’s mother, described Falvo as extremely kind and generous, saying he was like the father she never had. The family had welcomed the teen into their home after he experienced difficulties living elsewhere, and by all accounts, everyone had been getting along well before the attack.

Mental Illness Claims Surface

Outside the courthouse, family members told reporters that Bermudez-Chin has been struggling with mental illness for several years following a diagnosis. Anthony Ortiz, a relative, said the teen had been unmedicated by his own choice during this period. The family emphasized that Bermudez-Chin and Falvo had maintained a great relationship, leaving them unable to understand what triggered the deadly violence. Defense attorney Peter Mayer reminded the public that his client is presumed innocent and that prosecutors’ statements at arraignment do not constitute facts or evidence.
