A grand opening celebration for Marathon Burger in Long Beach, California, turned deadly Sunday afternoon when gunfire erupted outside the restaurant, leaving one person dead and two others hospitalized. The shooting occurred despite a heavy security presence and street closures for the highly anticipated event featuring rap legend Snoop Dogg and music icon Stevie Wonder.
Violence Interrupts Celebrity Restaurant Launch
The Long Beach Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 3:32 p.m. near Third Street and Pine Avenue. Officers discovered a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately rendered medical aid. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Two additional men in their twenties were taken to area hospitals with gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.
Video footage captured the chaotic scene as crowds scattered when bullets began flying. Law enforcement officers were later seen detaining a suspect near a parking lot, wrestling him to the ground as shocked bystanders looked on. The motive behind the shooting and specific suspect information remain under active investigation by Long Beach authorities. Police have not released details about whether the detained individual faces charges.
Restaurant Representatives Deny Connection to Opening
Marathon Burger, the fast food chain founded by the estate of slain rapper Nipsey Hussle, opened its newest location in partnership with the Broadus family. Snoop Dogg participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony and was photographed working behind the counter flipping burgers. Stevie Wonder greeted staff members and placed orders inside the establishment as fans gathered outside.
Casey Parker, a representative for Marathon Burger, told Fox 11 Los Angeles that the shooting had no connection to the restaurant’s grand opening. Parker stated that organizers had arranged for security personnel, street closures, and police presence at the event. He described peaceful activities taking place when violence erupted, saying people were eating ice cream and playing basketball games when shots rang out.
Community Shaken by Public Violence
The incident marks another episode of gun violence disrupting public gatherings in California. Long Beach police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether it was targeted or random. The restaurant chain honors the legacy of Nipsey Hussle, who was fatally shot outside his Los Angeles clothing store in 2019. His estate has worked to expand his business ventures posthumously, including the Marathon Burger franchise that aims to provide economic opportunities in urban communities.
