A Memphis mother of three is battling a life-threatening bacterial infection after a brutal dog attack left her with devastating injuries, including the amputation of her right arm and leg.
Horrific Attack Leaves Woman Fighting for Survival
LaKesha Newsom, 35, was discovered partially clothed in a ditch on March 3 by Holly Springs Police Department officers. Emergency responders airlifted her to Regional One Hospital, where she flatlined during transport and required resuscitation. Newsom told authorities she had been attacked by dogs. Nearly three weeks after the attack, police arrested Sandra Harris, 54, charging her with aggravated assault and manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life. Harris remains in custody at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
Mother Recounts Terrifying Ordeal
From her hospital bed, Newsom described the harrowing attack to her mother, Rosie Young. The victim recalled feeling the dogs gnawing on her body during the assault. Her sister, DeWaylia Young, reported that Newsom’s condition has taken a devastating turn. A bacterial infection contracted during the attack is spreading rapidly through her body, and doctors have warned the family that she may not have much time remaining. The injuries were so severe that medical staff had to amputate her right arm and right leg.
Community Rallies for Children Left Behind
The family has shifted their focus to Newsom’s three children, who face the possibility of losing their mother. DeWaylia Young established a fundraiser to provide support for the children during this painful transition. The campaign has raised nearly eight thousand dollars toward a ten thousand dollar goal. The funds will support the children’s daily needs, emotional care, and help create stability during this difficult time. Rosie Young told her daughter that her survival proves she has life within her, offering hope amid the family’s darkest hour as they take things moment by moment.
