A British mother received a life sentence with a minimum of 19 years behind bars after being convicted of murdering her two-month-old daughter in a case that took six years to bring to justice.

The Horrific Injuries

Zara Arsalan, 31, from West Bromwich, England, was found guilty of killing baby Harleen following a trial last month. Medical examiners discovered the infant suffered multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding, broken ribs, and a broken collarbone. Investigators determined the baby had also been violently shaken before her death. Emergency responders arrived at Arsalan’s home in July 2020 after receiving reports that the infant had fallen from her mother’s lap. They found the child with severe head trauma and unstable breathing.

The baby died in the hospital one day later from injuries that authorities said were completely inconsistent with a simple fall. Police concluded the trauma resulted from the child coming into contact with a hard surface with significant force. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole called the case incredibly tragic and noted that Arsalan never accepted responsibility for her actions throughout the entire investigation and trial process.

Despite being presented with overwhelming medical evidence that contradicted her account, Arsalan repeatedly lied about what happened to her daughter. The investigation spanned six years before prosecutors secured a conviction. Warwick Crown Court handed down the life sentence on Thursday, bringing formal closure to the criminal proceedings.
