A Georgia man faces arson and burglary charges after authorities say he stole money from a Sonic restaurant and then set the building ablaze in an early morning crime spree that left the Sandy Springs location destroyed.
Pre-Dawn Blaze Follows Theft
Sandy Springs police and fire crews rushed to the Sonic at 5903 Roswell Road around 4:55 a.m. Tuesday to find the restaurant engulfed in flames. Investigators quickly determined the fire was no accident. Before the blaze erupted, someone had taken cash from the restaurant and deliberately disabled the security system, covering their tracks as they prepared to torch the evidence of their theft.
Detectives identified Luis Quintana as their suspect and moved swiftly to secure arrest and search warrants. Officers found Quintana at his residence and took him into custody without any resistance. Police recovered evidence linking him directly to both the theft and the arson, though they have not disclosed the specific items seized during the search.
Serious Charges Filed
Quintana now sits in Fulton County Jail facing second-degree burglary and first-degree arson charges. First-degree arson represents one of the most serious property crimes under Georgia law, typically involving deliberate fire-setting that endangers human life or destroys occupied structures. The charges suggest prosecutors believe Quintana’s actions posed significant risk beyond simple property damage, potentially threatening nearby residents and responding emergency personnel.
High-Profile Location Targeted
The timing and location make this incident particularly notable. This Sonic opened its doors just in spring 2023, making it a relatively new addition to the Sandy Springs dining scene. The restaurant sits less than two miles from Inspire Brands’ Atlanta Global Support Center, the corporate headquarters overseeing the Sonic chain along with several other major restaurant brands. The location’s ribbon-cutting ceremony drew notable figures including Inspire CEO Paul Brown, Sonic Brand President Jim Taylor, and Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul, underscoring the franchise’s significance to the local business community. The destruction of such a recently established and prominently supported business location raises questions about security measures at corporate-adjacent franchise locations.
