Hiker Makes GRIM Discovery — Two Dead

A hiker stumbled upon the remains of two unidentified people on Mount Yonah in White County, Georgia, launching a multi-agency investigation that has left authorities with more questions than answers about how the victims died and how long their bodies remained undiscovered on the popular hiking trail.

The Grim Discovery on Mount Yonah

The hiker made the disturbing find at approximately 11:20 a.m. on September 9 while traversing the northeast Georgia mountain near Helen and Cleveland. White County Sheriff’s Office investigators immediately responded to the scene alongside the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The gravity of the discovery prompted officials to call in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Region 8 Crime Scene Unit to conduct a thorough examination of the area where the remains were found.

Mount Yonah draws thousands of outdoor enthusiasts annually due to its scenic trails and panoramic views. The mountain’s popularity makes the discovery particularly unsettling for the hiking community, as the location typically sees regular foot traffic from visitors exploring the northeast Georgia wilderness. Authorities have not disclosed the specific trail or area where the remains were located.

Critical Questions Remain Unanswered

Sheriff Rick Kelley’s office has withheld key details about the deceased individuals, including their identities, ages, and genders. Investigators have not revealed whether they suspect foul play in the deaths or if the victims may have died from natural causes, accidents, or environmental exposure. The condition of the remains and the timeline of death remain under investigation, leaving the public uncertain about potential dangers on the mountain.

The human remains have been transported to the GBI crime lab where forensic pathologists will conduct autopsies to determine the cause of death and work to establish positive identifications. Sheriff Kelley indicated his office would release additional information as the investigation progresses, though no timeline has been provided for when results might become available.

Investigation Continues

The active investigation involves coordination between multiple state and local agencies working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Investigators face the challenge of determining not only how the individuals died but also establishing how long the remains had been on the mountain before their discovery. The sheriff’s office emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation in a press release issued Thursday afternoon, requesting patience as forensic teams complete their analysis and identification efforts.

  1. You cannot expect immediate answers plus you may not even be privy to them. All dead body investigstions must start out as a homicide or murder since there is such thing as justifible homicide. But say the word homicide and everyone thinks of murder. Wrong ! You work the dead body up or down however the evidences unflolds. It may have been a natural or 1st degree murder. That takes time. Everyone today has no patience. They’re too used to answers in 10 seconds on their I phones.
