Socialist Candidate Defeats Impeachment Figure

Florida state Representative Angie Nixon stunned political observers by securing the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate against heavily favored retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman. Nixon won by almost 12 percentage points despite raising only $1 million compared to Vindman’s $16.3 million war chest. Vindman, who played a central role in the 2019 impeachment proceedings against Trump, spent approximately $9 million on the race while Nixon spent just over $700,000. The upset victory represents a major breakthrough for the Democratic Socialists of America in statewide Florida politics.

Nixon now faces Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the general election. Moody won a special primary to complete the remainder of Marco Rubio’s Senate term, which extends through 2028. Rubio vacated the seat after joining the Trump administration as Secretary of State. President Trump endorsed Moody, who was appointed to the position last year.

Representative Byron Donalds secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination with 47 percent of the vote, defeating Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins and businessman James Fishback. Representative Randy Fine easily won reelection in Florida’s 6th Congressional District with Trump’s backing.

However, scandal-plagued Representative Cory Mills lost his primary despite Trump’s February endorsement. Mills faced a House Ethics Committee investigation examining possible campaign finance violations, assault allegations involving a romantic partner, and improperly received gifts. Former television anchor Ryan Elijah defeated Mills in the Republican primary for the 7th Congressional District. Mills denied all wrongdoing throughout the investigation.

Late Endorsement Fails To Save Candidate

Catalina Lauf lost her bid for Florida’s 19th Congressional District despite receiving a last-minute Trump endorsement. Media executive Jim Schwartzel won the five-way Republican primary with 29.1 percent, while Lauf secured 22 percent. Businessman Jim Oberweis finished third with 15.7 percent. Lauf and Oberweis previously competed against each other in Illinois’ 14th Congressional District primary in 2020, where Oberweis won the nomination but lost the general election to a Democrat.
