A Brazilian social media influencer has been arrested for staging her own kidnapping to gain followers, dragging her unsuspecting husband into a terrifying ordeal orchestrated purely for online attention and ransom money, police revealed this week.
The Twisted Plot Unfolds
Monniky Fraga, a 27-year-old content creator with 48,000 followers, was arrested Tuesday following a year-long investigation into claims she made in March 2025. Fraga told her online audience that she and her husband Lucas were confronted by three armed bandits outside their home, then dragged to the woods where they were held hostage. She described her husband being attacked while criminals demanded their belongings and ransom payments. Detective Cley Anderson revealed the investigation uncovered something far different than a random crime.
Authorities determined Fraga conspired with one of the alleged perpetrators to stage the entire kidnapping for media attention. The scheme involved three men working alongside Fraga to create the elaborate hoax. One accomplice is currently imprisoned for unrelated crimes, while another was murdered before police could execute an arrest warrant. The third suspect, who allegedly received the ransom money, had his home in Várzea Paulista searched by investigators.
Husband Left in the Dark
Detective Anderson confirmed that Fraga’s husband Lucas had no knowledge of the fake kidnapping plot. Throughout the entire investigation, Lucas maintained he genuinely believed the terrifying experience was real. The revelation adds another layer of deception to Fraga’s scheme, showing she was willing to traumatize her own spouse for social media fame and financial gain through ransom payments.
Facing Serious Charges
Fraga now faces multiple criminal charges including blackmail, perverting the course of justice, and wasting police time. Her legal team has requested house arrest instead of jail time, citing her responsibilities as a mother to young children. The case highlights the dangerous lengths some social media personalities will pursue for online attention and financial reward. Authorities spent nearly a year investigating what they believed was a legitimate kidnapping, diverting resources from actual criminal cases. The incident raises questions about influencer culture and the pressures content creators face to maintain and grow their follower counts through increasingly extreme measures.
