TRUMP Attacks Massie Remarriage Backs Primary Challenger

President Trump launched a personal attack on Rep. Thomas Massie’s recent remarriage, claiming the Kentucky Republican became “liberal” due to his new wife’s influence while endorsing a primary challenger for the 2026 election.

Trump’s Social Media Attack

In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Massie of political transformation following his marriage to Carolyn Grace Moffa in October 2025. “People are saying that Thomas Massie became a Liberal because his new wife is supposedly a Radical Left flamethrower,” Trump wrote. He questioned the speed of the remarriage and labeled Massie an “absolutely terrible and unreliable Republican” who might be “a RINO, or maybe even worse.”

Trump endorsed Ed Gallrein, describing the Navy veteran and farmer as a “HIGH QUALITY individual” and “War Hero” who represents a superior alternative. The president claimed Massie “never votes for us, he always goes with the Democrats” and called him a “Complete and Total Disaster” who must lose decisively in the primary.

Personal Background and Criticism

Massie remarried approximately 16 months after his first wife, Rhonda, died in June 2024. His new wife, Moffa, previously worked as a policy staffer for Senator Rand Paul and was described by Massie as politically knowledgeable and supportive. The couple held their wedding ceremony in Pennsylvania, her home state.

Conservative critics called Trump’s personal attack inappropriate, particularly given Massie’s recent bereavement. The congressman has acknowledged ongoing grief over his first wife’s death while indicating he and his new wife have not taken the criticism seriously.

Political Context and Primary Battle

This escalation continues a long-standing feud between Trump and Massie, a libertarian-leaning Republican who frequently opposes party leadership on federal spending issues and recently pushed for releasing Jeffrey Epstein-related documents. Gallrein, who served thirty years in the Navy, entered the race with Trump’s endorsement, positioning himself as an “America First” candidate. Massie has reported strong fundraising numbers and dismissed concerns about his reelection prospects. The Kentucky 4th District Republican primary is scheduled for May 2026.
