Tragic Southern California Carjacking Involves Elderly Army Veteran

James Norman, a 79-year-old Army veteran, was tragically and senselessly killed during a carjacking in Southern California. Since Ryan Hewitt, the suspect, is facing serious charges, the incident has provoked outrage and calls for justice. This loss emphasizes the necessity of stricter laws to combat crimes jeopardizing American citizens’ safety.

A Veteran’s Life Ended

The incident occurred on May 12, 2025, at a gas station in Norco, California. While Norman vacuumed his Chevy Trailblazer, Ryan Hewitt, 29, jumped into the vehicle and drove off.

Norman, unable to detach from the car door quickly due to his vulnerability, was dragged and later thrown from the vehicle. Overcome by injuries, Norman tragically passed away, leaving his family heartbroken.

Legal Action and Investigation

Ryan Hewitt has been arrested, facing charges of felony carjacking and second-degree murder. The bail is set at $1 million as a legal battle unfolds to bring justice for Norman’s untimely death.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and Corona Police Department actively pursued the investigation. Norman’s daughter, Nicole Lauritsen, utilized technology by placing an AirTag in the SUV, aiding the swift location and capture of the suspect.

Honoring a Life Well-Lived

Despite living modestly, James Norman had a remarkable, adventurous life, ranging from his time in the Army to various construction and pilot roles. His dedication to his family and his zest for exploration left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

“Jim lived a modest, basic life, but also an adventurous life,” the family stated, emphasizing his authenticity and energy. A GoFundMe was set up to cover funeral costs, celebrating Norman’s unique spirit and commitment to his loved ones.

Norman is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sons-in-law, and a grandson, all left to cherish his memory. The nation must remember heroes like Norman and commit to safeguarding those who served with honor.
