Street Rename BLOWS UP As Residents RISE UP

A Southern California city council’s decision to rename a street after slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk has ignited fierce opposition from local residents, with protesters vowing to vote out elected officials who supported the measure.

Street Renaming Triggers Protest Movement

Westminster, California, officially designated portions of All American Way as Charlie Kirk Way this week, with new street signs appearing on the road leading to City Hall. The Westminster City Council approved the measure in a 4-1 vote last November, honoring the Turning Point USA founder who was killed while speaking at Utah Valley University in September 2025. Local resident Terry Rains organized protests in December attempting to block the change, telling ABC7 news her immediate reaction was disbelief and anger. She displayed signs calling for council members to be voted out of office.

Other residents expressed similar frustration with the decision. Ashley Lawrence from Los Angeles called the move hateful, while Garden Grove resident Ann Galvan said she initially thought it was a joke. The controversy has divided the Orange County community, with opponents arguing that renaming the street politicizes public buildings and removes an inclusive designation. Rains specifically objected to replacing All American Way, which she described as already welcoming to everyone. The council also voted to designate Kirk’s birthday, October 14, as Charlie Kirk Day in Westminster.

Mayor Defends Decision as Free Speech Tribute

Westminster Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen, a Republican who fled communist Vietnam in the 1970s, originated the proposal and defended it as a celebration of free speech rather than partisan politics. Nguyen told ABC7 he found inspiration in Kirk’s dedication to reaching young Americans and promoting open communication. The mayor rejected characterizations of Kirk as simply a Republican figure, instead emphasizing his patriotism and sacrifice for the country. Nguyen acknowledged the backlash but maintained that pleasing everyone remains impossible in public service.

Technical Details and Future Implications

According to the city council, the street redesignation applies only to physical street signs between Westminster Boulevard and 13th Street and does not officially change the street name or require address modifications for residents and businesses. Kirk, a prominent free speech advocate, built Turning Point USA into a significant conservative campus organization before his death during a speaking tour. The controversy reflects broader cultural tensions in California communities where political viewpoints clash over public symbols and commemorations. Whether the opposition movement gains enough traction to influence future council elections remains uncertain as protesters continue organizing against the officials who supported the measure.

  1. Naming a street after a bigot and racist is ridiculous. Just as ridiculous as his wife out soliciting money
    Disgusting.

    • It seems you think if you label and discredit consistently, it will become truth. He was a free speech advocate and he welcomed debate. He encouraged all to disagree in an agreeable way always affirming the dignity and worth of each individual.

    • I pray for your soul who has so much anger by calling name. The one who uses the word racist toward another person is defined by that word.

  2. Charlie Kirk Was Not a Bigot or a Racist. He was a Godly Person trying to spread the GOOD WORD and keep people from evil ideologies like Becoming WOKERS and Democrats.

    • You can disagree with someone’s politics, but that statement you made leans into the same kind of labeling it criticizes. Also, calling someone “godly” while dismissing entire groups of people as “evil” or mocking them with labels doesn’t exactly model the values most faith traditions emphasize- like humility, respect, and treating others with dignity.

  3. Kirk was in no way a hero and doesn’t deserve to be treated as one. This all sounds like a Trump “wants this” kind of thing and just because Kirk was a Trumpster doesn’t make him a hero. He was just another person who was sadly killed because he was a Trumpster.

    • He spoke to students to offer another side to the hate from the left. often times these young adults don’t know much except for what the leftist professor’s tell them, so Turning Point was developed to educate students, or at least introduce them to another way of thought. I guess if they named it George Floyd Blv. It would be perfect.

      • Groups like TPUSA aren’t neutral “educators”. They are political advocacy organizations, just like the groups on the left, pushing a specific ideology. That’s not inherently wrong, but let’s not pretend it’s some pure mission to “save students from hate.” Also, claim to “fight hate” while routinely labeling entire groups (leftists or Democrats, etc) as the problem is exactly the same behavior being criticized, just flipped.

    • Oh Zoe….You are in that mindset that can’t be changed, so I won’t try. Charlie was a good man, a Christian man who tried to educate young people and get them to think instead of follow. He didn’t care what their religion or political party was. Unfortunately too many people are indoctrinated into their political party, on both sides, and don’t stop to actually think about what anything is about. Someone doesn’t like something, so everyone jumps on the band-wagon to oppose it. Look at what they did to George Floyd. The guy was a druggie and wife beater, and sold drugs, stole from people, etc. He died, and the democrats all rose up and actually named streets, installed statues, and created honorary George Floyd Day which celebrates this type of behaviour. George Floyd is the absolute farthest example of a hero in anyones book. No, Charlie was not a hero. Naming a tiny portion of a street is an honorarium…nothing more. I said my peace, and I also know it has fallen on deaf ears….and a fractured mindset.

  4. MODERATION? hUMMMMM…Are the readers NOT allowed to write what they feel ? I mentioned no names, I’ve not intended to offend a soul… Is it now illegal for a person to speak his mind? Why is the comment awaiting moderation????

  5. Why is the left so afraid of Charlie Kirk? It’s amazing to me The hatred that comes out for a man who only wanted to spread love and harmony and be able to disagree without being disagreeable. Anyway, if we turn to Christ, he’s the answer. The hate tends to leave and peace enters into your heart, and soul.

    • The pushback you see online or in the media is usually about his ideas, claims, and rhetoric, not personal “fear” or hatred of Charlie Kirk.

  6. the left throws words around like love, inclusion, peace, fascist , hitler and democracy. yet they practice the exact opposite. they promote censorship, violence, hatred and racism. and claim they are protecting the people. and work for the people. and claim the people of peace , love , and good morals are the evil cult. anyone that believes in free speech, and is open to anyone’s opinion, like Charlie Kirk, have been named bigots and racists. the left does their very best to shut free speech down, especially if their beliefs differ from theirs. why? well the most influential group is the bought and paid for media, and the hard left demos. they play the part of do gooders, claim their words are the truth, and incite violence with their rhetoric. every one of them blame Trump for everything. their hatred has made them blind. when our Lord Jesus Christ returns, I’ll bet their eyes will be wide open.
