A naked Wisconsin man who admitted to drinking chemical cleaner hijacked an ambulance carrying a seriously ill patient and led police on a dangerous 18-mile chase through multiple jurisdictions.
The Ambulance Hijacking
Benjamin L. Feltz, 37, snuck into a Wisconsin Rapids ambulance while paramedics were loading a patient. The medical workers discovered the naked man in the driver’s seat and shouted for him to exit the vehicle. When one paramedic attempted to remove Feltz from the cab, he drove away with the patient still inside. The remaining paramedic was forced to jump from the moving ambulance, abandoning the seriously ill woman.
Police spotted the hijacked ambulance and attempted a traffic stop, but Feltz refused to pull over. The chase lasted over 40 minutes, covering 18 miles at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour. The terrified patient screamed from the back compartment, saying she was dying from kidney disease as the ambulance swerved through traffic on Highway 73.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Cornfield
The pursuit took the ambulance through Cranberry Creek Landfill on dirt roads before returning to busy highways. Officers deployed tire deflation devices to stop the vehicle. Feltz made what police called an aggressive maneuver in Pittsfield, driving the ambulance off-road into a muddy cornfield where it became stuck. Police bodycam footage captured Feltz exiting the ambulance completely naked while officers held him at gunpoint.
Criminal History and Charges
Feltz appeared heavily intoxicated during his arrest, slurring his words and admitting to consuming half a bottle of Fabuloso chemical cleaner. He also claimed to have marijuana in his system. Court records show Feltz has two prior drunk driving convictions and was driving without a valid license. He faces four felony charges and six misdemeanors, including first-degree reckless endangerment. A judge set his bond at one hundred thousand dollars, and he remains in custody awaiting trial.
