A heartbroken mother revealed the horrifying moment she discovered her 19-year-old daughter’s body inside a commercial bakery oven at a Halifax Walmart, opening new questions about the October 2024 tragedy that authorities cannot fully explain.
The Grisly Discovery
Mandip Kaur worked alongside her daughter, Gursimran, at the Nova Scotia Walmart when the teenager disappeared during their shift on October 19, 2024. Unable to reach her daughter, Kaur searched the bakery area and opened the walk-in commercial oven door. “I opened the door, and she was there,” the grieving mother said. “I couldn’t handle myself. I was there on the floor with her for five or 10 minutes.” Kaur described a black-brown liquid resembling tar oozing from the oven, which reaches temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The substance came from her daughter’s charred body, found next to baking racks and burned beyond recognition.
Investigation Raises More Questions Than Answers
Halifax Police initially treated the death as a potential homicide before determining it was not suspicious one month later. Nova Scotia’s Department of Labor found no workplace safety violations and confirmed the oven “could be opened from the inside.” Director Greg Hanna stated that investigators found no evidence that violations of occupational health and safety laws contributed to the death. The oven was in good working condition, and Walmart was cleared of wrongdoing. The store closed for four months, relocated the bakery section, and replaced the ovens with smaller models employees cannot walk inside.
Family Rejects Suicide Theory
The lack of clear answers led some to speculate that the teenager took her own life, but Kaur vigorously disputes this. She described Gursimran as a happy, dedicated student who served as valedictorian of her class with plans to study medicine and become a doctor. The family had spent the night before her death laughing and celebrating together. “Does she look depressed? She was so happy,” Kaur said. After the tragedy, a package Gursimran ordered for herself arrived at their home, suggesting she had no plans to end her life. The typical teenager loved music, makeup, and shopping, maintaining close bonds with her parents and 12-year-old brother. “After 18 months of investigation they are unable to discover what happened,” Kaur said. “They couldn’t find any solid thing. They don’t know.”
