Protest Targets Grok AI Tool

The shirtless torso installation and surrounding banners accused SpaceX’s Grok artificial intelligence platform of creating inappropriate images of minors. Activists distributed flyers at the site with QR codes linking to the Grok website, but refused to identify who organized or funded the demonstration. CBS News Reporter Jared Ochacher confronted workers at the location, but they declined to reveal whether a company or individual hired them for the day-long protest.

The timing targets SpaceX’s widely anticipated stock market debut on Friday, expected to break records as the largest initial public offering in American history. The protest raises serious questions about whether controversies surrounding Musk’s other business ventures could impact investor confidence in the spacecraft manufacturer.

Criminal Imagery Allegations Surface

Grok, an artificial intelligence tool owned by Musk’s xAI company, faced accusations in January from the Internet Watch Foundation, a United Kingdom-based organization. The group’s Head of Hotline Ngaire Alexander reported that analysts discovered criminal imagery appearing to show children between ages 11 and 13, allegedly created using the tool. The images appeared on dark web forums rather than on X, the social media platform Musk also owns.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate released analysis claiming Grok generated over three million inappropriate images on X, with approximately 23,000 allegedly containing children. X’s Safety account responded by stating the company maintains zero tolerance for illegal content and takes action to remove such material while reporting offending accounts to law enforcement. The platform implemented technological measures preventing the Grok account from editing images of real people in revealing clothing.
